Like all electricals, your Apple iPhone needs to stay within certain temperatures for it to function properly. If it gets too hot, you might have to shut some apps down or even turn your phone off to let it cool down.

Keeping cool

Apple recommends that you use your phone in temperatures between 0º and 35º C to make sure that it functions at its fastest.

Using it in higher or lower temperatures “might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly”, says Apple.

You should also make sure that you don’t store your iPhone in extreme temperatures, with Apple advising users to keep their phones out of parked cars or direct sunlight.

What happens if my iPhone overheats?

You might notice that your iPhone gets hot when it’s charging, or when you're using certain apps for a long time, which is normal. Apple explains: “The exterior of the device functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the device to the cooler air outside.”

But if the inside of your iPhone overheats, you might start to experience some temporary problems with your phone as it attempts to regulate temperatures. These include:

  • Your iPhone stops charging
  • The display dims
  • Signal strength becomes poor
  • Location services are disabled
  • Camera flash is disabled on the iPhone 4
  • Temperature warning screen appears with the message “iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it”.

Temperature warning message

The temperature warning message is a safety mechanism designed to keep the internal components of your phone cool and in good working order.

If you do get this message, you should turn your iPhone off, move it to a cooler place and let it cool down before you try to use it again.

A number of situations can cause your iPhone to overheat. Apple advises users to avoid:

  • Leaving your phone in a car on a hot day
  • Leaving it in direct sunlight for a long time
  • Using certain apps and features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a hot day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

If you find that you're getting the temperature warning message but don’t think that your iPhone is actually overheating, you should speak to your phone supplier or take it into an Apple shop.
