Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) mobile phone contracts put you in control of how much you’re spending.
If you're looking for a pay-as-you-go mobile deal you have two options: a PAYG kit including a mobile phone and a sim-card, or a sim-only PAYG card - perfect for users who want to keep their existing phone.
What are pay-as-you-go tariffs?
Most PAYG sim-cards are free, but some may require you to initially top-up £5 or £10.
With a PAYG plan you'll need to top-up with credit before you can make calls or send texts and once your credit has run out, you'll have to top up again. You can do this on the phone, online and even at special cashpoints and in shops.
You don’t have to have credit to receive calls however, though you might need to top-up before you can check your voicemail (depending on your mobile phone provider).
How do pay-as-you-go tariffs differ from contract deals?
PAYG mobile phone deals offer greater flexibility than contract packages that often tie users in for 12-, 18- or even 24-month mobile phone contracts, and have come a long way from the first PAYG mobile phone deals deals many years ago.
PAYG plans now offer far greater value for money, and while they can’t compete with the inclusive minutes and texts offered by expensive contract plans, they do come with a host of added extras, making them even better value for money, while their commitment-free nature makes them perfect for anyone on a budget.
However, many of the latest mobile phones are not available to PAYG customers, or you have to pay hundreds of pounds to get one.
If you want the flexibility of a PAYG tariff with the value and inclusive minutes of a contract plan, you could try a sim-only mobile phone deal on a rolling 30 day contract.
What do pay-as-you-go tariffs offer?
As well as being a great budgeting tool for anyone who doesn’t want to sign a long mobile phone contract, pay-as-you-go deals offer better value than ever before.
Many plans offer added extras when you top up, such as free texts, free calls to UK landlines, free mobile internet, bolt-ons and even double top-ups.
You can also get PAYG plans to suit your needs. For example, if you make a lot of calls and texts to numbers abroad, many mobile phone providers offer special sim cards that can reduce international calls to as little as 4p per minute, and international texts to just 15p.
