“Facebook inside Xperia” lets you tag mates from your photo album and see birthdays from your phonebook.

Two smartphones with Facebook functionality woven into other apps have been unveiled by Sony Ericsson.

The Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro both include “Facebook inside Xperia” functionality, which the phone manufacturer said makes the social networking website “immediately accessible from the most used areas of the phone”.

For example, you can share your favourite songs over Facebook directly from the smartphone’s music player and tag friends in photos without having to open the Facebook app itself.

Friends’ likes, interests and news updates are also automatically integrated into the phonebooks of both models. The pair can even sync Facebook events - such as birthdays - into your calendar.

Steve Walker, head of marketing at Sony Ericsson, said: “These turbo-charged smartphones now contain even more power, enhanced functionality, a larger screen and premium features unique to Sony Ericsson.”

Although both phones have relatively small 3in screens, Sony Ericsson has made the most of the space by ensuring that up to 16 app icons can be displayed on their homescreens.

Both models also feature:

  • Scratch-resistant displays
  • The latest “Gingerbread” version of Google’s Android operating system
  • McAfee anti-virus software
  • High-Definition (720p) video recording.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia mini and Xperia mini pro will both be available to buy within months, though it’s still a mystery how much they’ll cost or which networks will offer the phones.
