Samsung confirms Olympic phone but it won't be widely available
Mobile maker Samsung has unveiled an Olympic edition of its brand new Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. The special version comes with a Visa payWave app, which makes use of the handset's near-field communications (NFC) chip for contactless payments.
Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Olympic edition will not be widely available. It will only be offered to Olympic athletes sponsored by Visa or Samsung at the London 2012 Games.
DJ Lee, executive vice-president of marketing at Samsung, said: "The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been created with our human needs and capabilities in mind, and is the ideal device to showcase the ease and convenience of Visa's mobile payment application at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
"Mobile payment services enabled by NFC technology are gaining momentum around the world."
The special edition will enable users to purchase items by swiping their device at more than 140,000 contactless payment terminals throughout London. The Visa payWave app allows instant payments without a passcode, of amounts up to £20.
Launched last week in London, the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone is the highly-anticipated follow-up to the bestselling Samsung Galaxy S2 released just over a year ago.
It features a 4.8in AMOLED high-definition screen and is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, with a full 1GB RAM and either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB internal storage. The phone is due out on 30 May, and available to pre-order now. Virgin Media is the latest provider to announce that it’s stocking the handset.
