Supermarket giant Asda has started stocking its shelves with competitively priced mobile phones and sim-only deals.
Asda Mobile offers reasonable prices on calls to landlines and other mobiles, text messages and mobile internet. In many cases Asda Mobile’s prices undercut those of the major network providers.
Asda Mobile (www.asdamobile.co.uk) runs on Vodafone's network, so 99% per cent of the UK population is covered.
A handy postcode checker is available on Asda Mobile’s website for seeing what network coverage is like in your area, both indoors and out. The tool also colour codes the coverage quality of standard services such as telephone calls and 3G mobile internet.
Asda Mobile sells phones with a contract for a one-off upfront fee. It currently has over 50 models to choose from.
Prices start at under £20 for a basic mobile phone and range up to around £50 for a mid-range mobile phone that can also surf the internet. High-end smartphones are available, too.
Mobile phones from all the major manufacturers are available: Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG, Acer, Samsung and BlackBerry.
All phones are sold unlocked so will work on any network, should you ever switch from Asda Mobile.
Asda Mobile doesn’t do monthly contracts and you don’t need to buy a mobile phone from Asda Mobile to enjoy the benefits of their mobile network.
All you need is an Asda Mobile sim pack, which costs £5 and comes with £10 of free airtime credit. You then become an Asda Mobile pay-as-you-go customer.
With Asda Mobile you pay one flat rate for calls made in the UK to other UK phones, whether you're calling another Asda Mobile, another mobile network or a standard landline:
Airtime credit is managed directly from your mobile phone’s screen. So staying in control of how much your phone costs you is extremely easy with Asda Mobile.
Credit can be added by popping into an Asda supermarket. You hand over as much or as little as you want and the credit is automatically added to your phone.
You can also add credit to your phone using top-up vouchers (available from participating shops) or by popping into the Post Office.
With Asda Mobile you could make significant savings on calls, texts and mobile internet compared to rival network operators.
For example, top-up just £5 with Asda Mobile and you’d get roughly 62 minutes for telephone calls - more than double the minutes you’d get for the same amount of money on Orange’s Racoon tariff.
You could also send 125 text messages with a £5 Asda Mobile credit - most other networks would only give you 50 texts for the same amount.
