First new launch from Sony since split from Ericsson in January.

The Xperia S, the first smartphone unveiled by electronics giant Sony following its takeover of Ericsson, is now available in the UK.

It is the first handset in Sony's Xperia NXT series, dubbed the “next generation” of devices, and follows its acquisition of Swedish telecom firm Ericsson's share of Sony Ericsson in January.

It is powered by a 1.5GHz processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features a striking 4.3in touchscreen display with Sony’s Mobile BRAVIA engine for breathtaking colour and brightness. The high-definition (HD) screen is complemented by two cameras for HD recording, a 1080p lens on the back and front-facing 720p.

The main camera also has an impressive 12 megapixel photo resolution. The phone comes with 32GB of flash storage and is NFC-enabled, giving users access to a range of growing near field communications apps and services, such as wireless mobile payments and money transfers.

Contract customers can get the Sony Xperia S through O2, Three and T-Mobile.

Sylvia Chind, head of handsets at Three, said: “With a striking display, this is an ideal smartphone for those looking for HD entertainment.”
