Problems with the new HTC One smartphones damaging easily are only present in a few "isolated" cases, according to the firm.

Earlier this week, a number of customers who picked up the new HTC One S smartphone reported that the handset’s casing was showing unusual signs of damage.

It appears that for some customers, the ceramic coating surrounding the phone has been chipping and cracking, despite the handset not being dropped or bashed. HTC has confirmed the problem, but states it is limited to only a few of the handsets sold so far.

In a statement, it said: “HTC is committed to delivering a high-quality product and great experience for all our customers. There have been a few, isolated reports of this issue.

"The finish on the HTC One S was laboratory tested as being at a hardness similar to ceramic. While that's hard, it doesn't mean it's impossible to damage. Regardless, HTC takes quality very seriously and are providing all customers with an immediate fix and we are implementing some small changes to ensure customers do not experience this issue in the future.”

People who are experiencing problems with the HTC One S finish are advised to ask their mobile provider for a replacement handset. Since the phones are still under warranty, it shouldn’t be a problem to get a sturdier HTC One S.
