Hassle-free parking is here with a Google Android app that plots empty spaces on an interactive map.

Drivers around the world can now find parking places quickly and easily, just by whipping out their smartphones.

The free Open Spot app is an interactive map of available parking spaces which lets drivers vacating a spot share the location with drivers nearby using Android smartphones.

Open Spot marks available parking spaces to within 0.9 miles of your location. The app automatically refreshes itself as you’re driving, meaning you can always see the nearest available parking spots.

Vacant spaces are marked one of three colours:

  • Red spots indicate recently vacated spaces
  • Orange spots signify spaces vacated over five minutes ago
  • Yellow spots identify spaces emptied over 10 minutes ago.

Empty parking spots automatically disappear from the app’s map after 20 minutes, Google stressed. Unfortunately the app doesn’t differentiate between free and paid-for parking spots.
