Free software update adds multi-player online gaming, social networking for music, and more.

A free iPhone software update has been released that lets you battle your friends in online games or recommend your favourite tracks through a new social networking tool.

The update’s “Game Center” tool lets you play videogames with other iPhone owners over a wireless internet connection, while “Ping” has been described as iTunes-meets-Twitter because it lets you share details of your favourite songs and bands with “followers” or friends online.

Simon Piper, business development manager at Mobilechoices.co.uk, said: “Ping will help iPhone owners discover new songs and bands by seeing what their friends are listening to, making the smartphone a more powerful music device.”

The iPhone update, known as iOS 4.1, can be downloaded for free by connecting your iPhone into your iTunes account. The update is compatible with the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. The update also includes:

  • User improvements to FaceTime video-calling
  • Minor bug fixes
  • Bluetooth improvements.
