Top 5 small smartphones

The top 5 smallest mobile phones

Don’t want a big-screen smartphone weighing you down? These top five small smartphones are lightweight yet powerful.

Big isn’t always best, particularly when it comes to smartphones.

Sometimes a mobile phone needs to be small enough to slip easily into the pocket of your favourite skinny jeans or handbag, yet still powerful enough to check Facebook and, of course, to make telephone calls.

So we’ve rounded up our favourite selection of super-small smartphones and mobile phones, each impossibly small yet packed with features.

HP Veer

Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) Veer is about the same size as a credit card, yet still includes many of the same features as the Apple iPhone 4.

The Veer’s diminutive measurements - 3.2in tall and with a 2.5in touchscreen - make it perfect for occasions where you can’t carry very much, such as evenings out. However, the smartphone’s slide-out Qwerty keypad means you won’t have any issues composing text messages and emails.

Special social networking software also integrates feeds from the likes of Twitter and Facebook into a single easy-to-read screen.

Veer’s other features include:

  • A 5Mp camera
  • 8GB of storage for music and films.

Samsung Galaxy Mini

The Galaxy Mini is essentially a squashed down version of other Galaxy greats such as the Galaxy Europa and Galaxy S.

With a 3.1in touchscreen and 110 x 60 x 12mm dimensions the smartphone may look cute and cuddly, but its Google Android-based operating system ensures the phone’s still equipped with enough of the latest features to be taken seriously.

For example, the Galaxy Mini can still surf the internet and download apps like big-screen smartphones. It can also play music and video files from Micro SD memory cards and snap reasonable quality pictures with its 3Mp camera.

It’s worth noting that the smartphone’s 600MHz processor could mean apps, videos, etc don’t open as quickly or perform quite as well as on top of the range smartphones such as the iPhone 4 or LG Optimus 3D.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G

The Pearl 3G is one of the smallest Blackberry smartphones available, something it achieves by having an alpha-numeric keypad rather than the standard Qwerty key arrangement.

One downside of this is that it’ll take you longer to compose texts and emails on the smartphone than it would on, say, the BlackBerry Bold 9780.

The Pearl 3G is also a lightweight smartphone - just 122g - that still packs in all the standard BlackBerry features, including:

  • Business email support
  • BlackBerry App World.

Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro

One thumb is all your need to operate the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro because one of your favourite apps, such as Facebook, can be pinned to each of the 2.5in touchscreen’s corners.

Flip the phone horizontally and a physical Qwerty keypad slides out to help you write emails with haste. And because Google’s Android operating system runs on the smartphone the device also features the likes of Google Maps and downloadable apps from Android Market.

However, the touchscreen’s resolution and small size mean the smartphone isn’t ideal for watching videos on. Battery life can also be troublesome.

Motorola Flipout

If you’re looking for a small smartphone with as much style as your outfit then the Motorola Flipout is for you. Its 2.8in touchscreen slides across at a funky angle to reveal a physical Qwerty keypad below.

The smartphone’s square-screen design will also draw eyes, while the Google Android operating system will keep you connected to Facebook and Twitter.

Other cool features of the Motorola Flipout include:

  • MotoBlur - software that tracks the phone’s physical location from a PC
  • Mobile internet access.
