Tablet PCs are everywhere nowadays, yet the variety of accompanying pay-monthly deals is still relatively small. This makes it tricky to find a cheap tablet PC on a competitively priced deal that still includes a decent download allowance.

The alternative is to buy a sim-only tablet PC deal, giving you the freedom to choose between an assortment of packages without compromising on your choice of tablet PC.

Sim-only deals

Mobile networks haven’t yet caught onto the fact that some tablet PC fans want the option of buying their new machines on cheap and contract-free data plans - commonly referred to as sim-only packages.

However, the Mobilechoices.co.uk sim-only price comparison tool helps you navigate around this hurdle by letting you buy a tablet-centric sim-only deal and a network-free tablet PC for less than you might think.

Branded “tablet sim-only” deals are still few and far between, but you only need to compare sim-only deals that include a healthy and competitively priced mobile internet allowance.

For example, a 500MB monthly download cap might make do for your smartphone. But it’s likely you’ll find yourself accessing the internet and downloading more with a tablet PC - so pick a package with a higher download cap (such as 750MB or 1GB) to ensure you can always surf wherever and whenever without incurring extra charges.

What’s the best tablet?

Apple’s iPad 2 might be the first tablet that springs to mind, but almost every major mobile phone or smartphone manufacturer has now either released or begun developing an alternative.

Most tablets have broadly similar key features, including:

  • Mobile internet support
  • Video playback
  • Downloadable apps.

It’s always worth comparing one model against another to see how they differ in terms of features, however.

For example, while the iPad 2 offers up to 64GB of storage space, the rival Xoom from Motorola offers a limitless amount of storage for your films, apps, pictures and so on because it supports micro SD cards.

The most popular tablet PCs include:

  • The iPad 2 - lighter, thinner and faster than the original
