Buying a new laptop needn’t cost you an arm and a leg, because hundreds of great value mobile phone contracts are now available which include a free laptop alongside plenty of talk minutes and texts.

Mobile phones with free laptops

Imagine the feeling of being handed a free and brand-new laptop just for signing a new mobile phone contract – the latter is probably something you do every 18- or 24-months anyway.

Mobile phone deals including a free laptop are the perfect way of replacing your ageing desktop computer without paying through the nose.

But before you compare mobile phone deals with free laptops, you must know the golden rule:

  • Don’t just sign any mobile phone contract in order to bag yourself a free laptop.

Mobile phone contracts commit you to paying a set amount, perhaps £30, for 18- or 24-months. So it’s vital that the contract you choose offers the right mix of talk minutes, texts and mobile internet.

Average contract costs

Laptops are far cheaper than five years ago, so it’s possible to pick-up a mobile phone deal with free laptop from as little as £15 per month.

The quality of laptop you receive as a free gift will vary according to how much you pay each month.

£15 each month will probably get you a low-end laptop suitable for browsing the internet and sending emails.

The deal may include a relatively small amount of minutes and texts, while the mobile phone will probably be pretty basic - something like a Nokia C5 (compare Nokia C5 deals) or Samsung Genio Slide (compare Samsung Genio Slide deals).

£30 each month will get you a better laptop - one capable of surfing the internet, editing documents, video conferences and playing videogames on.

At this price-per-month you will also probably receive a smartphone, such as the HTC Wildfire (compare HTC Wildfire deals), and a generous amount of minutes and texts.

Which laptop?

Before you sign a new mobile with free laptop deal, decide which type of laptop you need. There are three basic types:

Netbook - very basic laptops with small screens, perhaps measuring 8in. Netbooks only have enough processing power to surf the internet and edit documents. They usually run the manufacturer’s own operating system, instead of Microsoft Windows, and may not include a DVD drive.

Notebook - more powerful machines with larger screens, often up to 13in. Notebooks do everything netbooks do but also come with Windows, have more storage capacity, include several USB ports and sometimes feature a user-facing camera for holding video conferences.

High-end laptops - very powerful machines suitable for everything from wireless internet to videogames. They have larger screens (anywhere up to 18in) for watching films and also include lots of storage capacity, spacious keyboards and advanced features.
