Buying a new mobile phone needn’t leave you penniless, because many of the latest models are free when you sign a monthly contract.

Signing a pay-monthly mobile phone contract is the surest way of getting yourself a free mobile phone or smartphone.

So with such a wide range of phones available and thousands of great value mobile phone contracts to choose between, why wait any longer to claim your free pay-monthly phone?

Are free mobile phone deals a con?

Mobile phone contracts that come with a free phone aren’t a con, so you don’t need to worry about the smallprint containing a hidden “one-off fee” for the phone when the contract expires.

However, mobile networks carefully calculate a monthly deal’s cost in order to offset the cost of giving you a free phone.

This tends to mean that the most recent and high-tech smartphones appear on the more expensive contracts. For example:

Less advanced “feature phones” then tend to appear of cheaper monthly contracts. For example:

How to pick a mobile phone deal

You can pick your free mobile phone deal in one of two ways:

  1. Decide which phone you want and then look for suitable deals
  2. Find a suitable deal and then see which free phones are available on it.

Whichever route you go down it’s important that you first decide how much you want to spend each month and what you need in return, such as 2,000 minutes, 500 texts and a 750MB mobile internet allowance.

Don’t let yourself be swayed into signing a more expensive monthly mobile phone deal simply because it offers a slightly newer model phone or a few extra texts.

Typical free mobile phone deals

Mobile phone contracts including free phones start from around £5 per month. Don’t expect the latest HTC smartphone for this though, as to get the latest smartphone for free you’ll probably have to pay upwards of £20-£25 per month.

If you want a particular phone but can’t afford the monthly contract commitment, try signing up for the longest contract available - usually 36 months - as operators often shave a few pounds of the monthly price if you sign-up for longer.

For example, a package including a free BlackBerry Torch 9800 could cost you £30 per month on an 18-month contract. But sign-up for 24 months and the monthly cost might be lowered to £25.
