Most modern mobile phones have cameras, though the photos they produce are often fairly low quality - perhaps over-exposed, grainy or blurred.
An image-enhancing photography technique has been adapted for smartphones, helping iPhone 4 and Google Android owners produce better images in almost any conditions.
The technique is called High Dynamic Range (HDR) and, put simply, it enhances a mobile phone or cameraphone picture contrast so that dark patches become lighter and colours become richer.
The improvements are instantly noticeable, with the resulting mobile phone picture being nicer to look at and more realistic than one taken without HDR.
HDR does all the hard work for you, so you don’t need to mess around with image settings, like white balance or shutter speed.
The iPhone and smartphones based on Google's Android operating system, such as the HTC Desire Z or Samsung Galaxy S, support HDR.

Android smartphone owners can easily improve their images by downloading an HDR app, such as Photo Enhance Pro and Camera 360 Pro, from Android Market - Google’s answer to the iPhone App Store.
HDR apps can also be downloaded to the iPhone from the App Store. However, the latest version of the iPhone’s operating system (known as iOS version 4.1) adds HDR for free.
The feature automatically combines multiple images of the same subject, like your dog in the park, to create a single stunning image. You’ll also be shown how the image would have looked with HDR switched off.
It’s worth noting that because HDR, at its most basic level, involves lightening an image’s dark patches, the iPhone feature can’t be used alongside the smartphone’s flash.
